The Serbian Handball Federation was founded on 17 and 18 December 1949 at the inaugural conference and Jovan Cekic was then elected its first president.
The word handball appeared for the first time in 1904 in the newspaper „Sokol“ („Hawk“) in the text titled „Games for society and school“. The text explained how to play the handball game. According to some information, it was Professor Vladimir Jankovic who introduced handball in schools in 1930.

Handball got its first followers among young people at youth camps.
The first Federal Conference on Handball was organized on 17 and 18 February 1948.
The Serbian Association of Physical Culture delegated Vojislav Vojnovic to attend the Conference. Later on, Vojislav Vojnovic was to become the longstanding Secretary, Vice-President of the Serbian Handball Federation and Secretary General of the Yugoslav Handball Association. Much of the credit goes to him for the promotion and development of handball in the Socialist Republic of Serbia; he practically introduced and founded this sport.
The first high school championship in Belgrade was organized at the end of April and May 1948. In November 1948, Belgrade’s teams started playing matches for the first Belgrade’s Championship. The ever growing young people’s enthusiasm committed the handball officials to organize as many handball matches as they were able to in order to promote the sport.
